PRACTICAL HOLINESS-AN OUTLINE
HOLINESS BY J. C. RYLE
From the Chapter 3, Holiness
I. Practical Holiness, what is it?
- Holiness is the habit of being of one mind with God.
- A holy man will endeavor to shun every known sin, and to keep every known commandment.
- A holy man will strive to be like our Lord Jesus Christ.
- A holy man will follow after meekness, longsuffering, gentleness, patience, kind tempers, government of his tongue. He will bear much, forbear much, overlook much, and be slow to talk of standing on his rights.
- A holy man will follow after temperance and self denial.
- A holy man will follow after charity and brotherly kindness.
- A holy man will follow after a spirit of mercy and benevolence towards others.
- A holy man will follow after a pure heart.
- A holy man will follow after the fear of God. (As a child fears or reveres a father that he loves and who loves him)
- A holy man will follow after humility.
- A holy man will follow after faithfulness in all the duties and relation in life.
- A holy man will follow after spiritual mindedness.
II. Why practical holiness is important.
- We must be holy because the voice of God in Scripture plainly commands it.
- We must be holy because this is the one grand end and purpose for which Christ came into the world.
- We must be holy because this is the only sound evidence that we have saving faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
- We must be holy because this is the only proof that we love the Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity.
- We must be holy because this is the only true evidence that we are the true children of God.
- we must be holy because this is the most likely way to do good to others.
- We must be holy because our present comfort depends much upon it. There is a close connection between sin and sorrow, holiness and happiness, sanctification and consolation.
- We must be holy because without holiness on earth, we shall never be prepared to enjoy heaven.
