A NATION IN DECLINE
The recent article in the National Review, titled, The United States of Decline, is a disturbing article. It is a summary of the social and political decline that is taking place rapidly in our nation. I urge anyone who will to read the article. http://www.nationalreview.com/article/371248/united-states-decline-deroy-murdock
The is truly a sad article and I think the truth of it is evident to most of us. The real problem is not political, it is spiritual and moral. Hear me out on this before you go on to something else. We have a deep lack of moral virtue in the country. No one can trust the government, politicians, or even their neighbors. We are so morally corrupt that we are at the place of social dysfunctions. Why? Because we have cast off the yoke of the Judeo-Christian morality that has been the foundation of our nation since its inception. You do not have to be a Christian to appreciate this. I know that some think that Christianity is out of date, it takes away our freedom, it inhibits our pleasures, and it makes us feel guilty. Yet, we are a nation riddled with guilt, a nation of bad behavior, a nation for whom our pleasures are literally killing us. We all understand that Law restrains us but we don’t want God to do the restraining.
Where can we find morality if it is not from this great Judeo-Christian tradition? Not all of our founding fathers were Christians but they all accepted and defended this moral tradition. In fact, as Deists, they believed specifically in the moral structures of the Bible. If the moral base of the nation is destroyed, there is no basis for our freedoms and our rights. Remember they are inalienable rights given to us by God. However if we deny that foundation, how do we determine right from wrong? If a man will cheat on his wife, he would certainly cheat on the people of this nation. If a man would steal from his partner, he will certainly steal from us. If a man will not keep his word to a friend, he will certainly break his word to the nation.
We have to recover our moral base. As I said, you do not have to be a Christian to appreciate this. But I think the greatest culprit of all in this is the American Church. We have abandoned basic principles. We have developed a have-it-your-way approach to church. We have forgotten that the church is not building, not a set of programs, not a stage with great music and entertainment, it is not a social club; no, the church is a community of fellow believers committed to the ethic, morals, and love of Christ who works these things out in our lives.
I beg you, I plead with you to turn back to these values on which our nation was founded. I would implore the non Christian to explore what Christianity really is and not reject it because of the nuts that you have seen or the contrary behavior of some that you have met. We are at a critical time in our history and I am not sure that we will make it if we do not change soon.
We value freedom. But the government is now taking over our work place, our health care which will result it the government telling what to eat and how to recreate. The government will soon tell you what kind of house to live in and where to live. We are losing our freedom because we no longer have freedom in our hearts. All we seem to understand is a narcissistic desire to do whatever I please without acknowledging the consequences to ourselves and to others. It is not reality that we can do whatever we want without consequence. It is not real freedom if there is no responsibility to govern that freedom.
I beg my friends and acquaintances, think about these things. Hopefully we can save our nation.
When considering the inalienable rights the right to the pursuit of happiness had to do with the civic virtues of courage, moderation, and justice. Yet in our era it has been shifted to mean I can do what brings me pleasure or makes me happy. Which affirms our culture’s moral decline.
